Campers learn about asthma from healthcare professionals and develop asthma management skills. For example, campers may learn:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How to use an inhaler correctly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How to avoid asthma attacks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How to recognize and avoid asthma triggers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But the asthma camp experience is more than just learning to manage asthma. It is also an opportunity for kids to be kids \u2013 go hiking, swimming, canoeing, climbing on a high ropes course, or dive down a Slip \u2018n\u2019 Slide \u2013 without the constant worry of asthma getting in the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is all done while in a medically safe environment, with support not only from staff but also peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits of asthma camp<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Asthma camp helps children learn to better control their asthma. Research shows <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6442804\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>children who attend an asthma camp<\/strong><\/a> have better asthma control for at least a year after camp:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They are more likely to use daily preventive asthma medication.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are less likely to miss school.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are less likely to go to the emergency department or be hospitalized due to asthma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At asthma camp, children learn to become more independent as they develop asthma self-management skills. Doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists are typically on hand daily, along with specially trained camp counselors. This gives parents peace of mind knowing their child is in good hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At asthma camp, your child will be monitored daily for asthma symptoms. The healthcare team will make sure your child is taking daily medications and using a quick-relief inhaler when needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Camp staff will understand how to identify symptoms and potential risks. They will know what to do in case of an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who can attend asthma camp?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some camps are for children with mild or well-controlled asthma. When asthma is well-controlled, a person with asthma should be able to do anything a person without asthma can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It all starts with finding the camp that is right for your child. You don\u2019t need to assume that your child\u2019s options are limited due to asthma. If your child wants to attend a camp that is not health-related, or if they have specific interests such as music or sports, there\u2019s likely a suitable summer camp out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter which camp you choose, do plenty of homework beforehand. Talk with your child\u2019s doctor about the camp. Be sure the camp staff is aware of your child\u2019s unique needs. Confirm that all staff members (not just the lead counselor or nurse) are capable of handling health concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What about smoke from a campfire or fireworks?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Smoke is a common asthma trigger. Most asthma camps will likely not have a campfire on the evening schedule. Communication is key. Take time now to prepare, then feel confident that you, your child and the camp staff are all on the same page.
